Abstract:
Adaptive automation, which serves to dynamically allocate tasks between a system and its user, is a process that has reached sufficient maturity that we are able to begin to present viable design guidelines. With increasing levels of automation in society, the lessons learned in the past 30 years are growing more pertinent for modern systems implementation. In this article, we provide a brief examination of this history (see also Scerbo, 1996) and then introduce the major guidelines that have been proposed, based on the existing body of experimental research.
